Renovation Details

The beloved Grote Zaal will regain its own entrance, surrounded by elegant foyers, squares, and streets. The renovation also enhances sustainability with better insulation, LED lighting, and the addition of rooftop gardens and greenery in the surrounding streets.

Transforming the Space

Our goal is to turn the Grote Zaal and the surrounding foyers into an inviting, open space. We’re bringing back the original wooden floor, maximizing natural light, and revitalizing the architectural style. Soon, you’ll be able to visit the Grote Zaal during the day to explore exhibitions, enjoy music, or watch rehearsals. You can grab a drink with friends or work with a view of the Dom. A vibrant, colourful wall textile will embrace every visitor.

About the Grote Zaal

Designed in the 1970s by Herman Hertzberger, the world-renowned Grote Zaal (‘Great Hall’) has been a cherished part of Vredenburg music centre since 1979. Restored to its original glory for the opening of TivoliVredenburg in 2014, the hall maintains its unique character and superb acoustics.

Project Partners

This renovation is made possible by the support of donors, companies, funds, and the Municipality of Utrecht, along with various partners. AHH, the firm of Herman Hertzberger, designed the new facade and entrance, while deMunnik-deJong-Steinhauser, the team behind Groningen’s Forum, crafted the foyers’ interiors. The surrounding streets are also being revitalized with new furniture, greenery, and energy-efficient lighting, in collaboration with the municipality, NOAHH, and Hoog Catharijne.

Special thanks to the 27,039 visitors who donated €2.50 per ticket and the 1,900 donors who contributed €102,400 through crowdfunding, ensuring a stunning new entrance and beautifully renovated foyers.
