Zeventig jaar geleden, op 4 april 1949, is de NAVO opgericht en daarom organiseert Jonge Atlantici een verjaardagsfeestje. Op deze avond bespreken we de afgelopen zeven decennia, de huidige staat van de trans-Atlantische betrekkingen en bovenal: heeft de NAVO nog toekomst? Hier gaan we op in met ervaren én beginnende professionals en experts. Daarnaast krijg je zelf de mogelijkheid je stem te laten horen.

De NAVO heeft door de jaren heen flinke veranderingen meegemaakt. Opgericht in de Koude Oorlog om de Sovjetunie af te schrikken, moest het bondgenootschap na de val van de Berlijnse muur volgens sommigen nog steeds de hoeksteen van het Nederlandse veiligheidsbeleid vormen. Hoewel het zeventigjarig jubileum een mijlpaal is heerst er geen feeststemming in het bondgenootschap.

In 1957 sprak de eerste secretaris-generaal, Lord Ismay, dat de NAVO bestaat “to keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down.” Vandaag de dag mengt Rusland zich in Westerse democratische processen, wordt de zin van het bondgenootschap betwijfeld in de VS en wordt er in Duitsland gepraat over een Europees leger en strategische autonomie. Kan het adagium van Lord Ismay in 2019 overboord? Kom naar NATO Night 2019 en doe mee aan de discussie!

Seventy years ago, on April 4^th, 1949, NATO was established. To celebrate this fact the Netherlands Atlantic Youth organizes a birthday party. On this evening we discuss the past seven decades and the current state of Transatlantic relations, but first and foremost we will ask ourselves: what does the future hold for NATO? We will discuss these questions with professionals and experts in Transatlantic relations, but we are also curious to hear from YOU!

NATO has seen significant changes through the years. Being founded in the Cold War to deter the Soviet Union, the alliance had to reinvent itself after the Berlin Wall came down. According to many the organization still is the cornerstone of Dutch security policy. However, at its 70^th anniversary the alliance is not exactly in celebration mode.

In 1957 the first Secretary General, Lord Ismay, famously stated that NATO exists “to keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down.” Today Russia actively meddles in Western democratic processes, many doubt NATO’s use in the US and the idea of a European army and strategic autonomy is actively debated in Germany. Does Lord Ismay’s old adage still ring true in 2019? Come and discuss at NATO Night 2019!
