Muziek van Georg Friedrich Haas is bedwelmend, hallucinerend en misschien wel verslavend. Het slaat je ankers en zekerheden los. Gevoel voor tijd en ruimte glippen door je vingers als woestijnzand. Dat geldt ook voor Solstices (zonnewendes), dat zich net als In Vain, waarmee componist Haas internationaal doorbrak en in Nederland (dankzij Insomnio) bekendheid verwierf, ruim een uur in volstrekte duisternis afspeelt, wat het vervreemdende effect alleen maar versterkt.

Solstices is moeilijk in woorden te vangen: hoe beschrijf je zinderend zonlicht, de invallende schemering, het ontbreken van een horizon? Een poging: een piano neemt de leiding en stuurt tien musici allerlei kanten op. Het spectrum is overwegend micro-tonaal, waarbij instrumenten soms als mieren om elkaar heen cirkelen en krioelen, en een machtig bouwwerk construeren waarvan niemand weet welk bouwplan er wordt gevolgd en wie het zo heeft bedacht. Heftige climaxen worden afgewisseld met muisstille passages en zoekende melodieën. Luisteren naar Solstices kan leiden tot een soort out-of-body experience, even weg van jezelf, wat ook wel eens lekker is. Inderdaad, een muzikale trip: louterend, verrijkend, ontregelend en helend.

Music by Georg Friedrich Haas is intoxicating, hallucinatory and perhaps addictive. It loosens your anchors, your certainties. Sense of time and space slip through your fingers like desert sand. This also applies to his ‘Solstices’, which is to be performed in complete darkness for over an hour, lik In Vain, with which Hass broke through internationally and gained fame in the Netherlands. The darkness reinforces the alienating effect dramatically. Solstices is difficult to put into words: how do you describe shimmering sunlight, the falling twilight, the lack of a horizon? An attempt: a piano takes the lead and sends ten musicians in all kinds of directions. The spectrum is predominantly micro-tonal, with instruments sometimes circling and crawling around each other like ants, constructing a mighty sound arc of which no one knows wichi building plan is being followed or who conceived it. Intense climaxes are interspersed with sparse passages and searching melodies. To throw in one more image: listening to Solstices can lead to a kind of out-of-body experience, away from yourself, which is also nice sometimes. Indeed, a musical trip: purifying, enriching, disruptive and healing.
